A Big Smile and a Bigger Heart
At the beginning of this school year, Jackson joined Mrs. Kylee’s caseload at Liberty Elementary for attendance concerns. However, it quickly became clear to the program manager that Jackson’s story was about so much more than unexcused absences. From the start, his kind heart and willingness to try stood out.
When he first arrived this year, Jackson and his family were facing some big challenges, and their household had little outside support. But through Mrs. Kylee, the school and CISTN became a lifeline. Mrs. Kylee worked closely with Jackson’s mom and local community partners to meet his family’s needs. Together, they provided a new backpack, clothing and shoes, warm jackets, food boxes, a donated stove, tutoring support, and mentorship.
Having someone in his corner made all the difference, and Jackson began to really blossom. His attendance improved with no more unexcused absences. He started to catch up academically, proudly writing his name and learning to recognize each letter of the alphabet. He loves building with blocks, drawing pictures, and making crafts.
These days, Jackson comes to school in nice clothes and a big smile, excited to learn. He beams when he gets his snack from Mrs. Kylee, especially since it comes with a positive affirmation for him. Every day, Jackson’s hugs are as big as his heart and his progress reminds everyone around him just how far a little care and connection can go!
