Luis Now Loves Coming to School

Luis’s program manager buys him a McDonalds meal for every month of perfect attendance.

Last school year, Luis faced significant challenges that led to him missing 56 days of school. His frequent absences reflected deeper struggles at home—barriers that made daily attendance feel impossible. But this year, his story took a remarkable turn.

To support Luis and his family, Agni Gomez Perez, the program manager at Glencliff Elementary School, began by giving his mother information about the importance of regular school attendance and providing mom with essential resources and basic needs. She also created a personalized attendance plan. This includes weekly check-ins to offer encouragement and a one-on-one check-in once a month so they can talk about any issue or struggle that Luis is having at home or in school.

Ms. Agni also checks in on Luis in the hallways and during lunch and celebrates him for being present. To keep Luis motivated, Ms. Agni also created an attendance plan specifically for him. For every full month he comes to school without missing a day, he earns a McDonald's meal of his choice. Luis now loves the class he is in and he loves getting McDonalds as a reward for good attendance!

So far this school year, Luis hasn’t missed a single day. Now, Ms. Agni calls his mom once a month to check on her and to congratulate her on the amazing work that she is doing. “He is a super happy child that loves coming to school this year,” said Ms. Agni.
