Our program manager, Ms. Fisher, first met Macy soon after she and her family relocated from Michigan due to seek a safer living situation. Arriving in Nashville with nothing, the family faced numerous challenges. Recognizing their needs, Ms. Fisher immediately connected them with the Metro Nashville Public Schools HERO program, which supports families experiencing homelessness. Ms. Fisher also helped Macy’s mother secure employment and assisted in obtaining a Section 8 housing voucher. By December, they were settling into a brand-new house, a milestone that brought both stability and hope for Macy and her family.
With all of these struggles, Macy initially struggled academically, testing very low and appearing likely to be retained in the 3rd grade. However, under Ms. Fisher’s guidance and math tutoring, Macy’s work ethic and confidence began to soar. Teachers soon noticed her remarkable progress, and during a field trip to the Frist Art Museum, even the tour guide praised her for her perceptive questions and insightful comments. Today, Macy is on track to be promoted to 4th grade, a testament to her resilience and the unwavering support she’s received from Ms. Fisher and the CISTN community.
