Landon Looks to the Future
Beginning with his freshman year at Bledsoe County High School, Landon missed an average of 20 school days per year and averaged C’s academically. This made him chronically absent and at high risk of falling behind his peers, so he was referred to CISTN program manager Ms. Rachael to help improve his attendance.
As Ms. Rachael built a relationship with Landon, he shared that he lived in one of the most rural parts of the county, severely limiting his access to reliable transportation and basic resources. She worked with Landon and his parents to coordinate transportation; helped the high schooler schedule overdue doctors’ visits; provided him with essential school supplies such as a backpack, pens, and paper; and made sure the family had food over holidays and breaks.
Before Landon’s grandmother passed away his senior year, she told Landon that she believed in his great potential and encouraged him to become the first person in his family to attend college. Her words inspired Landon to get serious about his future.
The senior started showing up to class consistently, and his absences dropped to just five days this year. His grades excelled, and he earned straight A’s this year. His commitment and character earned him multiple Student of the Month awards and recognition from peers, teachers, and school administrators.
Landon also applied to colleges with Ms. Rachael’s help, and was recently accepted to Chattanooga State Community College, where he will prepare for a career in the culinary arts. While Landon mourns that his grandmother won’t be at his graduation, he knows that she would be incredibly proud of him for becoming the first person in his family to attend college.
Landon’s story isn’t an outlier: Right now, 242 high school seniors we serve are applying to colleges, scholarships, and jobs over the next few weeks. Will you donate today to ensure that students like Landon have the support they need to start their college and careers strong?
