December 23, 2016

Mrs. Katrina Arije is a second year site coordinator at MLK Prep, where she focuses on supporting 11th and 12th graders in the battle against chronic absenteeism. We’re thankful to have Katrina as a member of the CISTN Memphis team and we hope you enjoy getting to know her by reading her survey answers below!

What is your favorite thing about working at Communities In Schools?

My favorite thing about working with Communities in Schools is the interaction that I have working with students on a daily basis, and the fact that I get to see them grow and mature throughout the school year. I love the fact that I get to meet my students where they are without denying them services because their GPA isn’t high enough.

What advice do you have for kids who are struggling in school?

The best advice that I have for kids who are struggling in school is to give it your all, and don’t give up. I understand that children have different capabilities and academic levels. This gives me a chance to motivate them, and help them overcome their struggles. My students who struggle trust me very much, because I don’t judge them.

What would you most like to tell yourself at age 13?

The sky is the limit.

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

I have 9 other siblings and I'm the youngest of them all.

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?

I would like to be a Dentist for a day.

What three traits define you?

My sweet spirited personality, my calming voice and my optimistic personality.

What would you like to be your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment was receiving my Master’s Degree in 2010, despite the fact that I said, once I complete college, I am done with school for good.

What is the one thing you cannot resist?

I can’t resist speaking to others. Being that I was reared in the South, by two parents who are from the country, it is a habit to speak to people I don’t even know. I have to catch myself sometimes from trying to figure out where I know a person from. It’s hard for me not to greet someone.

Where is your favorite place to be?
I love to go to my vacation home in Orlando, Florida with my husband and kids during the summer break. The weather is always good, and customer service is dynamic almost everywhere you go. Spending quality time with my family is priceless.

How do you define success?

Success to me is when you have mastered your goal. Everyone should set attainable goals and stick to them. Once you can see that you have accomplished your goal, this is when you can say, job well done. Everyone can experience success if you put your mind to it, and work hard.
