SPOTLIGHT: Brittney Grega, Site Coordinator

October 22, 2016

At CIS we see family engagement as a crucial element to our success and know that greater parental involvement in a student’s life promotes greater student success. To help increase family engagement at her school, Brittney Grega – third year site coordinator at Kirkpatrick Enhanced Option Elementary – hosts monthly parent meetings at the school. These meetings are an opportunity for parents to meet regularly with Brittney and receive important information and knowledge about their child and ways they can help them succeed in school. We’re thankful to have Brittney as a member of the CISTN team and hope you enjoy getting to know her by reading her survey answers below!

What is your favorite thing about working at Communities In Schools?

It is so hard to pinpoint just one favorite thing about my job with CIS. I love so much! In the student support services field, regardless of who the employer is (school district, community mental health agency, etc.), staff members are often assigned to multiple schools. Being assigned to only one school is incredibly impactful for the work that I do because I have been successful in building extremely strong relationships with students, parents, and faculty/staff and doing this work would not be possible without relationships. Working full time in one school also really helps me to be “in the know” of what is happening.

What advice do you have for kids who are struggling in school?

Reach out for help! As a site coordinator, my interaction with students directly in the classroom is limited. Sometimes teachers come to me and request support for students, and other times they do not. Without the feedback from teachers, parents, or students, many times I don't know when problems exist. If a student is struggling with school, home life, or anything, please reach out to people who can help.

What would you most like to tell yourself at age 13?

Clothing brand is not important. Nobody cares if you have a moose on your polo!

Tell us something that might surprise us about you.

My grandfather and I are a musical duo! I sing and he accompanies me on the trumpet, or really any horn instrument that I ask him to play.

If you could do another job for just one day, what would it be?

I would love to work as a sous chef in a fancy, high-end bakery.

What three traits define you?

Hard worker, loving and free-spirited.

What would you like to be your greatest accomplishment?
I’m not interested in fame, being the face of something, or leaving any type of real legacy. I typically enjoy working behind the scenes in most situations, but I dream of being a crucial member in a social/political reform movement. I feel like our country has regressed significantly in regards to civil rights and that is something I have absolutely no tolerance for. As a social worker, my goal is always to empower others to fight for themselves and build a community that stands together.

What's your favorite ice cream flavor?

Definitely mint chocolate chip. It’s even better when served as a clown cone!

What's your favorite Halloween costume you've ever worn?
One year, obviously when my brother and I were very young, we dressed up as Barney and Baby Bop. It was epic! My mom used to sew all of our clothes, so it was a homemade costume. I don’t how she did it, but she stuffed my tail so full that it stuck straight out.

Where is your favorite place to be?

My happy place is a nature fitness trail about a mile from my house. It is the best cure for a hard day.
