COVID-19 Response

In Schools and Now Beyond

At Communities In Schools (CIS), we go wherever we are needed and do whatever it takes to connect students to the supports they need in the classroom and beyond. While schools are closed, we are working in communities across Tennessee to bring resources to the kids that need them most.

In these unprecedented times we are working collectively as a nation and community to help fight the spread of COVID-19. All school districts that we partner with have made the very difficult and responsible decision to suspend normal operations through at least the end of April. While this immediately increases social distancing which is of the utmost importance, it leaves students and families wondering what this means for them. At Communities In Schools of Tennessee, the safety and well-being of our state’s most vulnerable students is paramount. So while campuses must remain closed, CIS is taking the necessary steps to continue providing our services to students across Tennessee.

This is not an easy task. The very premise of our agency’s model relies on being IN schools. CIS thrives on building relationships with students by being on campus every day all day working alongside students and staff. The fight against COVID-19 has compelled us to do the next right thing by pivoting our integrated student support model to a virtual and remote platform of connection and support.

Over the past weeks CIS has been working diligently to adapt to this ever-changing situation, and stand ready to do everything in our power to support our students and connect them to needed resources and services.

What we are doing to help...

  • Continuing 1-on-1 support through phone conferences, focusing on academics and social emotional wellness with our case managed students

  • Providing referrals to available community resources

  • Collecting and delivering basic needs and non perishable food items

  • Helping families navigate the various academic, health and other relevant community systems

  • Seeking support to provide emergency financial assistance for families impacted by loss of employment or additional childcare costs

How You Can Help

Make a donation

We simply can’t do this alone. If you are able to give, please consider donating to support the expansion of CIS services during this public health crisis. We have set up a COVID-19 Response Fund that will enable CIS to serve those who are negatively and disproportionately affected during this time.
